I adore her darling pixie cut and striking blue eyes.

Caleb

After taking a couple of seasons off, you’ve decided to play soccer again! The weather has been awful for much of 2013, so you finally had your first games this past weekend. It was SO fun to watch you play. We can see your natural instinct as you flow with the ball on offense and defense. You gave a great effort and appeared to really enjoy playing (except for all of the running, lol).

Your face LIT UP when the coach put you in as goalie. This whole new persona came over you. You took on the roll and loved it. I had to tell you 3 times to stop hanging on the goal because you were so fired up. Hmm, less running, getting to use your hands, punting the ball… I’m thinking goalie may be the spot for you : D We are super proud of you, Bubba!

Jayda, one week from today you turn 13 ~ unbelievable! I know it’s cliche but, time has gone by SO fast.

Two weeks ago you fell at indoor soccer practice and fractured your radius. Dad & I were talking about the fact that you’ve had more stitches than us and neither one of use have ever had a cast… and we were 4 sport athletes. Therefore, as I reflect upon the past 13 years I can’t help but think about the medical issues you’ve had.

You seem to be our child that visits the doctor often. Even before you were born you were sent me to the hospital as you kept flipping from head down to breech. And being the stinker that you are, I ended up needing a C-section because you landed breech when my water broke. You had non-stop ear infections as a newborn which resulted in tubes at 8 months. Once the tubes we in, every cold resulted in bronchitis. You lost a battle with an end table just before your 4th birthday which required 5 stitches above your left eyebrow. Then, there was the time at age 5 when your knee locked up for days. Thank God we have an amazing Chiropractor! If you turn your neck just right, you end up needing more therapy from the chiropractor. After a strep infection that refused to leave, your tonsils were so swollen that they had to be removed along with your adenoids and getting turbinates zapped at age 7. You would occasionally get sharp pains in your chest that the doctor thought was asthma related. You were on inhalers for a while but we realized that wasn’t the issue. The pains naturally went away after a couple of years. At age 9 you needed braces because the orthodontist needed to shift all of your teeth to the right to make room for the permanent teeth on the left side of your mouth… and you still have them. There was your hand accident last year which required 24 stitches and gives you quite the story about scars. And now, your broken arm.

I want you to know that I’d go through all of that again for you. You are amazing, truly amazing. Don’t let anyone ever convince you otherwise. You are my favorite girl in the entire world! I love our times together. I love your sense of humor, your beautiful smile, your contagious laugh, your competitive spirit that knows the line that doesn’t need to be crossed for the sake of friendship. I love every single one of your freckles – and don’t you dare argue with me on that topic! You were (and are) the answer to our prayers. You are incredibly precious and we wouldn’t trade you for the world. I love you, Sweets!

Every year just before your birthday we do a photo shoot. This year we decided to mix it up a bit. Your cast comes off the day after your birthday. AND, we found out last week that your braces will come off by the middle of June! I thought it would be great to have your official 13 year old shoot with those things removed. So, we did a best friends photo shoot. It was freezing cold. You crazy girls insisted on wearing shorts and dresses anyway. We had tons of fun! Next time, we will wait for warmer weather.

Here are some photos from our shoot:

Caleb John, it’s your turn to receive a letter. You officially turned 8 1/2 a couple of weeks ago. I tell you all of the time that you need to stop growing… but you just don’t listen! Although you are too big for me to carry, I love that you will still snuggle with me. Life is always and adventure for you. So, even if we are just snuggling while watching TV, we usually end up playing cards or a board game as well. Lately, your favorite game to play Rummy.

Your current fascination is Skylanders. You’ve been researching videos on the best characters and finding secrets to how they work. Right now, you are in the midst of a hard lesson learned with your Skylanders. Remember when I surprised you with the starter set? Remember how we stated over and over again that you had to take care of the Wii discs and characters? I’m certain that you will not forget that you left the disc laying bare on the floor and the puppy destroyed the disc. As much as I want to bail you out, I know it is best for you to learn your lesson… for you to have to earn the money to replace the item that you didn’t take care of. Although difficult, these are the things that will develop your character.

Another big thing that happened this month is that you got glasses for reading. You are just as handsome with the glasses as without. Thanks for letting me snap a few pictures of the tight-lipped grinning you…

And, thanks for giving me all of your other faces/smiles too. I love you Bubba!

Our pup turns 1 today… well actually, she was a Leap Day baby. So, the big decision came up… do we celebrate her birthday on Feb 28 or Mar 1? We decided we will always celebrate her birthday “the day after Feb 28″ each year whether that be Feb 29 or Mar 1.

Late Winter 2012

The kids kept on asking if we could get a dog. We kept telling them that we needed to have the Honda and Jayda’s braces paid off so that we could save the money for a dog. Through top secret conversations, Aaron and I had been doing research. We settled on a Cockapoo due to the cute factor, the upper weight of a small dog, and no shedding. We had been checking out Cute Cockapoos online because I had a referral from a former college roommate who got their dog from them. With each litter that was born we would oooh and aaah over the puppies. We knew that we still had to get those couple things in order financially before we considered purchasing a puppy. The braces were finally paid off but then there was the car.

Last February, a week before Aaron’s birthday, a person from our church approached me wanting to get a dog for our family. Aaron had invested time counseling this family and they wanted to give him this gift as a birthday present. Knowing the breed we wanted and how much they cost I was not sure what to say. As I spoke with this person describing what we were looking for in a dog, s/he said “it sounds like a Cockapoo would be prefect for you.” My jaw hit the floor. The family had a budget for this incredible gift and the pup fit into that budget. It was SO hard to try to make this decision while keeping it a surprise… should we accept such a gift?

Sometimes the weight of ministry can really wear on a person. That last week of February was one of those mentally and emotionally draining times at work for Aaron. The family presented him with a birthday card at the perfect time, just when he needed a pick me up. He was humbled and in awe of their thoughtfulness and generosity. We accepted the incredible gracious gift that has given us SO much joy.

REESEY-ROO

So, we were checking the website for any new puppies. Do we want a Buff? Apricot? Red? Black? Chocolate? Tri-color? Merle? Party? I mean really… SO many options. The first new litter that we came across was the Chocolate Tri-color. We loved the unique color and markings so we jumped on it. We waited to tell the kids because we couldn’t bring her home until the middle of April. We told them a couple of weeks before we were supposed to pick her up so we could try to figure out a name. There were many options and it seemed to take forever for all 4 of us to settle on a name. We landed on Reesey because her chocolate and tan coloring reminded us of a peanut butter cup. Not long after we brought her home she ended up being called Reesey-Roo and many times it just becomes Roo.

Reesey is a bundle of energy with tons of personality. She figured out how to ring a bell to go outside the first week. She adores her morning walks. She loves people. Honestly, you’d think she could wag right out of her skin when people come over. She likes to snag the kitchen towel that hangs from the stove. When she wants to play, she will grab your shoe or sock or a toy and run across the house to tease you with it. She gets super excited to bring the kids to school and pick them up each day. She’s a blessing!

Here are some shots from this past year. She was 5 lbs when we brought her home. Now, she’s a shade over 20 lbs.

I was invited to join a blog-circle group called “Letters to Our Children.” I decided to participate because it involves taking photos of my kids and telling them how much I love them… sounds good to me : ) Although I am not great with words, I will do my best to communicate, capture, and enjoy this project! Each month I plan to alternate between my kids, unless there is an event that occurs that should be written to both of them. As a part of the “blog-circle,” I will always include a link to another person in the circle. Please take a moment to check out the post by my friend Jes Gwozdz. Doesn’t she have the coolest last name? Ok, so, here goes…

Jayda, my precious jewel, you are on the cusp of your teens and changing exponentially these days. You’ve just about caught me in height. You would prefer hanging out with your friends. Texting is your new favorite thing to do. You are developing a teenage wit and attitude. There are times when we drive each other nuts. However, we still have sweet mother/daughter moments as well . You don’t think I’m cool, but I am (you really don’t have it THAT bad when it comes to parents, haha).

I’m SO proud of the young lady you are becoming. I see determination, resilience, forgiveness, and grace in you. You’ve proven it through school, sports, and accidents. There are a few instances that stand out in my mind when we could see your true character. These are moments that actually taught me about what it means to carry yourself well.

A couple of years ago, you didn’t make the U11 soccer team in Fondy. It didn’t make sense to us or even your coaches. We were all hurt and discouraged. Yet, you finished out the season with a great attitude and played your best for the team. The following season you played down a level. I know it was difficult for you but you became a leader on that team. You persevered because you love the game. We moved to Plymouth that summer and you tried out for the select team here. Although you were anxious about the try-outs, your determination landed you a spot on the U13 team (a level higher than your age).

When we moved just before 6th grade, you were the one I was most concerned about. How would you transition? I mean, Caleb can make friends with a stick on the playground, so I knew he’d be fine. But, you were older and the “new kid” in school. Who would be your friends? Would the move have a negative effect on you or your school work? I spent hours praying for you. It didn’t take long for you to find a couple of quality friends who accepted you just as you are… crazy in all : ) You have embraced the move and thrived!

The last instance has to do with your “accident” last summer. Not once did you throw a pity party. Not once were you angry or hold a grudge. You displayed more grace and forgiveness than most grown adults. I’m the type to beat myself up when mistakes happen. I will never forget how that experience and your response spoke to me. I am beyond proud of the girl you are becoming!

So, even though there are times I see more of this instead of your beautiful face…

And, even though there are times you are annoyed by me (especially when I’m taking your picture at a restaurant)

I hope that you always remember the times that bring about laughter… and never forget that I’m proud of you and I love you.

I was approached by my friend, Heather, whom I’ve photographed many times (wedding, couple, pregnancy, newborn). She wanted to give a photo session to her in-laws as a Christmas gift. See, her sister-in-law, Winnie, is in the military and recently returned from deployment. In a couple of days she will return to Hawaii where she will be stationed until she leaves for overseas once again. Although, one of the siblings wasn’t able to make it back for this session, we decided to do it anyway. This way, we could get some photos of all of the grandkids. Plus, Winnie definitely needs some new photos of her & her son while she is gone. Time is precious!

It was down right cold the day we shot. The kids were not handling the temperatures. Who am I kidding? I wasn’t handling it well either plus my fingers were freezing! We moved to another location that was under construction and heated. It would be a great studio

Thanks for choosing me to capture this time of your lives. I hope you find a bunch of photos that you love!

I’ve known this family for a few years. I had the privilege of photographing Noah’s older brother 2 years ago.

Mom was concerned about getting a natural smile our of Noah. She did such a great job of interacting with him and being completely goofy behind camera.

They both made my job easy and I’m thankful for that.

Denise & Noah, thank you for choosing me for Senior Portraits (once again).
